1. INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE
The purpose of this item is to allow council to discuss and vote on an agreement with TXDOT for ongoing signal and traffic control device maintenance on the state road system within the Bee Cave incorporated limits.
2. DESCRIPTION/JUSTIFICATION
a) Background
Municipalities over 50,000 in population are required by law to maintain traffic control devices on the state system within their boundaries. Though Bee Cave does not meet the population threshold there are 4 state highways that surround and run through the city. Staff has been in contact with TXDOT and are in agreement to assume the duties of ongoing maintenance responsibilities of these devices.
The regional office serving Bee Cave is part of an 11 county region. Though some of the existing signal maintenance work is contracted out by the state, there is a direct line of communication between residents and City staff unlike residents to TXDOT. Staff feels it is appropriate to partner with the state to take on this role in an effort to provide exceptional service to our residents and guests while maintaining the strong partnership with our area TXDOT representatives.
b) Issues and Analysis
Functionally the city would contract the work out with consultants, likely the same used for the single City owned signal on Bee Cave Parkway. Costs incurred under this agreement will be reimbursed monthly by the state.
